About the Song

Jeremiah was an Old Testament prophet. He lived through some exceptional times, but he hung in there. Kept the faith, you could say. I imagined what it would have been like if he'd been a figure in western lore, a sheriff or some such. So I wrote down Jeremiah Cowboy on a stray piece of paper, and had an idea of how the chorus would go, and that was it.

Decades later, when I thought about making a more country oriented album, I revisited the idea. Wrote a lot of verses, could never figure out how to have a beginning, middle and end. Marty Robbins came to mind. His great album, Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs.

Many times the hero dies in Marty's songs, so it seemed an appropriate way to end it. Also, it's not exactly uncommon for the good guy to meet an early demise. Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and numerous others come to mind. Guys that stood up for the weak.
