Behind the Song
This is another "based-on-a-true-story" song. I was at a blues jam at the Blue Goose, a popular blues spot north of Detroit (St. Clair Shores), where I ran into Jon Johnson, local blues drummer for The Alligators.
Jon had played on my cover of the Albert King classic, Cadillac Assembly Line. He looked especially worn out that night, and during a break I asked him why. He told me about the other two jobs he had besides playing music…
I said, “Why do you work so much?”
He said, “There’s too much month at the end of the money.”
I know a song title when I hear one.
DeSean Jones killed it on the tenor sax, as he always does, and DeSean
and John Douglas made up those cool licks on the outro on the spot.
Antonio Johnson and Ryland Kelly brought the James Brown funk.
Some Tower of Power influence on this one,
with nowhere near as many horns.

Too Much Month At The End Of The Money
Saw my friend Jon, that’s his real name, looking tired and beat
Said he was working two jobs, trying to make ends meet
Burned the candle at both ends until the wick was gone
Didn’t have nobody else to depend on
Jon told his wife, “I hate to tell you honey
There’s too much month at the end of the money.”
He said, "Car payments, mortgage, cable, Internet
Smart phones, insurance, credit cards got me in debt
Trying to make a living in this disappearing middle class
All I can say is American dream, my ass
I wish I was kidding, but it just ain’t funny
There’s too much month at the end of the money.
"'Keep your nose to the grindstone,' that's what they told me
I’m about to cross the line called poverty
I may just have to declare bankruptcy
There's too much month at the end of the money."
He said, "There's gotta be more than one way to skin this cat
Just what it might be, well I don’t know that
Everything the kids want costs an arm and a leg
Feel like I’m sitting on a financial powder keg
I did the math and I’m no dummy
There's too much month at the end of the money."
There’s too much month at the end of the money
I thought there was supposed to be an economic recovery
All I know, it hasn't trickled down to me
There’s too much month at the end of the money
There’s too much month at the end of the money
